Surrounded by lightness, transparency, and modernity, Dr. Dr. Christian Flörke opens the doors to MKG Dorotheenstrasse in Hamburg.

The Mission

At Dorotheenstrasse 48 in Hamburg, the challenge was to plan and design new practice premises across a generous 285 square meters. A newly founded specialist practice for oral and maxillofacial surgery, as well as plastic and aesthetic operations, located in the heart of Winterhude. In these modern facilities, patients are offered sophisticated diagnostics and treatments for complex conditions—a level of expertise that needed to be reflected in the interior design. Dr. Dr. Christian Flörke envisioned a unique spatial experience that clearly stands out from the competition, allowing patients to sit back and feel completely at ease.

The Challenge

Between October 2023 and January 2024, the objective was to create entirely new practice facilities. This required a complete re-installation of practice-specific utility lines as well as extensive fire safety renovations. The latter necessitated a phased construction approach, leading to separate handover dates in mid-January and late February 2024 – a significant coordination challenge for the entire HEIKAUS team. Furthermore, logistics were complicated by an undersized elevator, which made the delivery of materials and waste disposal extremely difficult.

The initial concept and dental planning were managed by van der Ven-Dental GmbH & Co. KG. Building on this foundation, the full design concept—including material definition, sampling, and detailed execution planning—was developed and realized by HEIKAUS Design Studio GmbH.

The Solution

Upon entering the new premises, patients immediately experience a light and open loft character—with a unique and unmistakable ambiance. The generous entrance area creates an impressive ‘aha effect’ at first glance. A reception counter, reminiscent of an exclusive hotel, provides an immediate sense of well-being.

Modernity combined with a special sense of coziness: this is achieved, in part, by the continuous light wood-look flooring throughout. The practice gains its distinctive charm from the bright, high ceilings and the minimalist elegance of the interior design. Floor-to-ceiling glazing, subtle natural colors, high-end materials, and pleasantly warm lighting create this exceptional atmosphere. Despite the ceiling height and predominantly smooth surfaces, one immediately notices the pleasant acoustics, ensured by selected acoustic ceilings and specialized soundproof doors.

Exclusive design wallpapers serve as eye-catchers in selected areas. Floor-to-ceiling factory-style sliding elements offer views into and through the spacious waiting area, lending the premises their unique loft character. The waiting area features soft, muted tones accented by charcoal hues, which are tastefully reflected in various furniture pieces and elements throughout the practice. Modern, cozy armchairs with a pleasant wool-like feel invite patients to relax and linger. A service point is available for refreshments, where waiting patients can help themselves. The result is a harmonious overall design in which everyone can truly feel at ease.
